2nd Floor

Second floor of the tower staircase. Straight ahead is the second floor elevator door.

2nd Floor Balcony

The second floor entrance is at the top of the tower staircase. It opens onto the balcony that runs over the great hall.

Girl's Bredrooms

The first bedroom that you come to has it's door on the balcony. It's daughter, Irene's bedroom. Her room is finished in a Gothic style.

In the dressing hall between the two bedrooms is the girl's bathroom.

The toilet paper dispensers in the bathrooms are all heavy duty. Not the cheap ones we have today.

Also state-of-the-art was the toilets. Being tankless, the arrow indicates the flushing lever on the wall.

Back out onto the balcony, walking south, up a few steps and through the door leads to the master wing of the 2nd floor. This is a series of rooms used only by Frank and Gertrude.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is the oldest room in the house. It was taken from a centuries old castle in England and broken down, numbered and shipped to America and re-assembled in the construction of Stan Hywet.

The only problem was the little windows. In England, they looked out over a garden outside. However, at Stan Hywet, they would be over the great hall. At first designers planned to remove the windows.

But Mrs. Seiberling had an idea. She said she wanted the windows to stay in place. She would call them her Chaperone's window. She could watch over any boys that came to call on her daughters. So the windows stayed.

The bed is where Gertrude Seiberling passed away in 1946. She had been ill for some time. She layed down one afternoon on the bed to take a nap and never woke up.

The master bedroom as the Seiberlings saw it.

Dressing Room

There a private hallway from the master bedroom that leads to the dressing rooms. This is where the Seiberlings kept their clothes.

Master Bathrooms

Gertrude's Bathroom ~

Gertrude's bathroom is just beyond the dressing room.

Frank's Bathroom ~

Frank's bathroom is right next door.

Frank's bathroom is complete with a needle shower. This was the massage shower of the day.

Sleeping Porch

In the back corner of the master suites, by Frank's bathroom is the sleeping porch. This was the only room at Stan Hywet, other than the wine cellar, that was not heated. Frank Seiberling would sleep sometimes in this room in the winter with all the windows open. That was a health kick of those days. He lived to the age of 96 in decent health. Maybe it works!

Morning Room

The morning room is located right across the hall from the master bedroom. This room acted as Gertrude's office. Here she wrote letters and played her beloved piano. Gertrude was an artist and did some of her painting in this room. Her artworks cover the walls.

Private Staircase

At the end of the hall, next to the morning room is a private staircase that the Seiberlings used to get from the master suites downstairs or upstairs quickly.

Boy's Bedrooms

Seiberling sons,Williard and Penfield shared a bedroom.

The room is full of "boy's" things such as these antique flintlock pistols.

During World War I, the boys thought that these decorations about the fireplace alcove looked like German helmets with the pointed tops. So the drew cartoons of Adolf Hitler in two of them.
